I am behind, in terms of quilting “trends.” I came across the “Postcards from Sweden” at the end of last year and fell madly in love with the quilt’s design and colors. I know it’s not for everyone and in the past have not gravitated toward bright colors, but this was a quilt I was going to make. After researching how to best make it, I ended up purchasing a kit from Cali Quilt Co.*
I started on the project this past winter but got sidetracked with other projects. Then as the new year neared, I knew I had to finish the quilt. I originally intended to give this quilt to my mom in June for her birthday and in time for a big celebration we would give her. Well, from December to April I changed my mind several times, but eventually, I came back to the Postcards from Sweden quilt. As June drew closer, I buckled down and sewed. Once the quilt top was done, I fussed about finding the “right” backing and came across a bright and lovely fabric (an out of stock print from Craftsy/Bluprint).
Once I sandwiched the quilt, I thought of quilting designs using my walking foot, even putting washi tape on the quilt top to visualize the design. I originally settled on and started out quilting curvy lines vertically on the quilt, but halfway through, I didn’t like it. Not one bit. So, I undid all the quilting and stitched in the ditch, quilting diagonal lines. I wanted a more intricate quilt design but knew that I didn’t have the time (of course, it was all of my fault because I kept changing my mind as to which quilt to make for my mom). While I did not personally like the quilting that I did (I wish I had chosen a more intricate quilt design, I wish I had done a better job with the binding, I wish I had done a better job lining up the half-square triangles), I worked through many of my perfection tendencies to just get the quilt done on time.
I actually have another Postcards from Sweden quilt top in the making (apparently one of my sisters love the look of it and has requested that I make one for her) and I love the design so much that I’ve purchased another kit from Cali Quilt Co.
Have you made a Postcards from Sweden quilt or would you like to make one?
*I am not sponsored by Cali Quilt Co., nor am I affiliated with them. I just happen to have purchased a quilt kit from them and love their product.
